Water quality monitoring is the process of sampling and analysing the water condition/s or quality.

The quality of water is described by the chemical, physical, biological and aesthetic conditions or properties of the water which would usually determine its suitability for example, domestic use (drinking/washing), agricultural, industrial etc. If the quality of water is poor, it may cause health risks for humans and ecosystems.

Water quality monitoring is a mandatory requirement, stipulated in the National Water Act(1998) (NWA).

What is the purpose of water quality monitoring programme

Case study

Scenario: Developer has received a Water Use Licence (WUL) for proposed development of a bridge that will potentially impact on watercourse. As part of the EMPr and condition of the WUL they are required to submit quarterly reports of to the Department of Water and Sanitation.
Solution: Ecosphere can conduct water monitoring and sampling to analyse/ assess the impacts of activities during the construction and/or operational phase that will affect the water quality.
